We live in a world bombarded by content. There are feeds, blogs, podcasts, and breaking stories at our fingertips 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The sad part is a ton of it is negative. It is news that kills our spirits, breaks our hearts, or angers us. As a result, many people detach from society’s biggest problems. Humans of New York Showcases Nadia Lopez, Principal Who Gets the Importance of Keeping Kids Close

In case you missed it, Humans of New York featured middle school student, Vidal Chastanet. This simple encounter has impacted a community and has even reached the White House.

You see, Vidal attends Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Brownsville was referred to as "the deadliest place in the city" by NYMag back in 2008. It is a community where 11 shootings occurred within 15 days in 2010. In May 2014 more people had been shot in Brownsville than in all of Manhattan. It is one of New York City's poorest areas with nearly 40 percent of people living below the poverty line.
